Istanbul municipality readies to sell meat
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality is preparing to establish a butcher-shops firm in order to balance skyrocketing meat prices, announced Mayor Kadir Topbaş on Saturday.
Istanbul municipality will start up a new project consisting of butcher shops in various districts of the city, he told Anatolia news agency.
“We will care about the benefits of small butcher shops, and try to integrate them into the project,” he said.
“The municipality-owned company will offer contracts to the correlates in favor of traditional smalls butcher shops,” the mayor said.
“We want to discuss the issue with butcher shops in Istanbul and concerned chambers.” Still, the preparations are not finalized, he noted.
“Providing cheaper meat with high quality is among our responsibilities, and we care about the concerned sector,” he said.
“The issue should also be taken to a county councilor for a final decision,” Topbaş said.
Meat for the new company might be provided either by Meat and Fish Institution, or EBK, or a similar institution. “We will look for ways in which we could add the small butcher shops to this project,” he said.
Fish on the agenda
Topbaş said the fishery products could also be provided for cheaper prices if sellers could assemble in small district’s street bazaars in accordance with hygiene standards. The preparations for creating allocated locations within the traditional street bazaars of Istanbul, in order to provide cheaper fish for the residents, are still on the agenda.
Istanbul Halk Ekmek A.Ş is another municipality-owned firm that has been producing and selling bread since 1978. The company works with a similarly open-minded and ambitious attitude, and produces nearly 1.8 billions of breads daily in three facilities in Istanbul
